Welcome to AARUPADAI VEEDU MEDICAL COLLEGE AND HOSPITAL
The Aarupadai Veedu Medical College and Hospital (MBBS at Aarupadai Veedu Medical College, Pondicherry), was established at Pondicherry in the year 2000, with due approval from the Government of India and Medical Council of India. The first batch of 100 Medical students was admitted successfully for the academic year 2000-2001. Presently 800 students are studying in the College.
All pre-clinical and Para-clinical departments are located in the college premises. They are fully equipped with their own Laboratory, Library, Demonstration Room and Museum. The necessary basic equipments and staffs are available in the college. Med-Varsity functioning in the Institution with the 15 systems. The college having both intranet and internet services. This institution is tele-linked with other members of VMU for telemedicine purposes.
The bed strength of the Hospital is nearly about 750. The ICCU & IMCU are fully equipped. The Central Sterilization department and the Central Oxygen and Vacuum Connection are fully functional. At present 11 Air-conditioned Operation Theatres are available in the Hospital. Defibrillator, ventilators, CT scan, new x-ray machines, ultrasound, nephrology unit, dialysis machine and auto analyzer are other equipments are available.
FACULTY OF ALLIED HEALTH SCIENCES:
Faculty of Allied Health sciences started in the AV-Medical College and Hospital campus in the year 2003. It was started with Dept. of Audiology and Speech Language Pathology and now it has 4 departments catering to 7 courses at Diploma, Bachelor degree and M.Phil level. Students from different part of India are studying. All the departments have well equipped laboratories supervised by highly qualified and experienced professionals.

The college has 8 departments – 3 pre clinical, 4 para clinical and community medicine departments.
It has a large, roomy dissection hall. Apart from these, there are two demonstration halls and one histology laboratory. Each cadaver is allotted for 8 students. The anatomy museum is the biggest in Pondicherry university area. It is divided into various sections such as embryology, osteology, limbs and head & neck area. There are explanatory notes near each specimen. More than 100 charts are hung on the walls for students to study by themselves.
It has four spacious laboratories and two demonstration halls.
It has its own large, single laboratory. Each student has his/her own work place. This department is the office for international biochemical research. It has PCR Laboratory, which is fully equipped. Many researches are going on. Postgraduate’s students undergo training.
- Major Equipments: Fully Auto Analyzer (Chem Welll) – 1 All Biochemical Parameters including liver function test, Cardiac enzymes, Urine Strip Reader, Semi Auto Analyzer (BIOTRON –BTR, MERCK, ERBA) – 3, ROBONIC HORMONE ANALYZER – 1, Centrifuge (REMI)-1, Colori Metter – 1, Electrolyte Analyzer ROCHE, BIOLYTE, EASY LYTE –PLUSE, STARLYTE) – 4
This has two laboratories and one research lab. The museum has more than 1500 specimens. Specimens from outside the institution come for expert opinion to this department.
- Major Equipments: Mindray BC – (ATO Cell Counter – 1), Star (PT, APTT) – 1Incubator – 1, Binocular Mciroscope -2, Centri fuge (Remi) -1, Water Bath – 1, Hot Air Oven – 1, Differental Count
Various researches are going on in this department. Since experiments on animals are prohibited, all the experiments are recorded on video and projected during laboratory hours for the students to learn. The college ethical committee and college bulletin publication are under the control of department of Pharmacology.
Fully staffed, there are four postgraduates in this department. This department monitors the hygienic aspect of Pondicherry Municipality. This department is conducting many researches. It has excellent laboratory facility.
- Major Equipments: Elisa Reader with washer – 1, Microscope-1, incubator bacteriological -1, hot air oven -1, centrifuge -2, VDRL Rotator – 2, Cabinet for Culture, Glassware and Chemicals for diagnostic Purpose.
The museum of forensic medicine department has a very vide range of lethal weapons, fauna and excellent charts.
Community MedicineThree rural (including one training) and one urban health centers are attached to this department. They cater to the needs of nearby villages. The department has a good museum.
There are four lecture halls which are gallery type and air conditioned. Three of them can accommodate 180 students while the fourth one holds 250 students. Each lecture hall has its own audio visual equipments such as LCD projector, OHP & slide projector. The table and benches are individual.
Each department has two demo halls with the capacity of 75 students. They are equipped with LCD projector and OHP projector.

The college and hospital are housed in the same single campus; but the buildings are separate. They are built in the middle of 31 acres of land. Apart from these two buildings, the institution also has students’ hostel, C.R.R.I. hostel and staff quarters. There are seven-play grounds apart from track & field area.
The college area is 3,41,000 sq. ft. New additions in the form of classrooms, demo halls, laboratories and lecture hall are being constructed. There are four galleried air-conditioned lecture halls in the college and one in hospital. The auditorium is big and can hold 800 persons at a time. In the hospital there are 26 departments including Accident & Emergency. The bed strength is 540. Patients from Pondicherry as well as from surroundings villages attend the hospital. The hospital area is 2,20,000 sq. ft.
- Facilities for Special Radiography (For example, Barium and Dye Studies), Ultrasonographs, C.T. Scans , mammographs, Echo Cardiography, TMT, MRI are available
- The hospital has latest equipments such as MRI, CT Scan, dialyser etc..
- The MRI is open type and is 0.3 tesla capacity.
The casualty section has been upgraded to Accident and emergency section with 20 Post Graduates getting trained in this specialty. The Accident and Emergency section is capable of managing any sort of emergency cases. The casualty has ventilator, defibrillator, mobile X ray ECG machine etc.
There are another six departments on the clinical side having postgraduate’s courses. Apart from the regular clinical departments super specialty departments such as Plastic Surgery, Nephrology, gastroenterology and Vascular Surgery are functioning in the hospital. Well-qualified doctors are working in the various clinical departments.
Various research schemes including those, which assess the potency of various drugs, are being carried out. Many medical camps are being conducted in the various villages. Students are made to participate in these two programmes.
There are 12 main operation theaters, which are air conditioned ones. Two are for General Surgery two are for Obstetrics and Gynecology and one each for E.N.T, Orthopedics and Ophthalmology. Special equipment such us c–arm, resuscitation equipments, operating microscopes etc. are available.

Eligibility for MBBS
Candidate should have completed the age of 17 years on or before the first day of July of academic year in which the candidate is seeking admission.
a. The Higher Secondary Examination or the Indian School Certificate examination which is equivalent to 10 + 2 Higher Secondary. The study should comprise of Physics Chemistry and Biology with English.
b. The Intermediate examination in science of an Indian University Board.
c. The pre-Professional / pre-medical examination with Physics, Chemistry and Biology, after passing either the higher secondary school examination.
d. The first year of the three years degree course of a recognized University with physics, Chemistry and Biology including a practical test in these subjects.
Selection of Students: Merit basis: –
• Candidate must have obtained not less than 50% marks in English and 50% marks in Physics, Chemistry and Biology taken together both at qualifying and competitive examinations.
• For Scheduled Castes/Scheduled Tribes and Other Backward Classes (OBC) the marks obtained are read as 40% instead of 50% Candidates who have passed any qualifying examination shall obtain an eligibility certificate from the University.
• Cut – Off Date for Admission for I Year MBBS Course is 30th September every year.
ACADEMIC YEAR, ACADEMIC TERM & DURATION OF COURSE OF STUDY
• The academic year commences from 1st August every year.
• The Academic Term for every Student shall be a certified period of study extending over 41/2 academic years followed by one year of Compulsory Rotating Resident Internship.
• First MBBS – 1 year
• Second MBBS – 1 ½ year
• Third MBBS – Part – 1 – 1 year
• Third MBBS – Part – 2 – 1 Year
• One year of compulsory Rotatory Resident Internship
Eligibility for PG Courses
The candidate must possess recognized MBBS degree and should have obtained permanent Registration as medical practitioners with the Medical Council of India or any of the State Medical Councils.
In the case of foreign nationals holding non-schedule foreign medical qualifications, they must have temporary Registration (issued by Medical Council of India) for the duration of their postgraduate Training restricted to the medical college / institution to which they are admitted for the time being for post graduate studies and for no other purpose.
Selection of students
The students applying for PG degrees/PG (Dip)/ Higher Specialties courses under Vinayaka Missions University shall be selected based on “ALL INDIA ENTRANCE EXAMINATION” conducted by this University.
Candidates who have passed any qualifying examination shall obtain an eligibility certificate from this university by remitting the prescribed fee along with the application form before seeking admission to the Medical Institutions.
Last Date for Admission
The last date for Admission to I Year of PG degree / diplomas is 31st May every year.
The last date for Admission to I Year of Higher specialty is 30th September every year.
M.D. / M.S.
The minimum period of training for obtaining these degrees shall be three calendar years.
The minimum period of training for these degrees shall be two calendar years, after obtaining M.D., M.S. degrees, or equivalent recognized qualification.
